This complete, hands on, inquiry based, inter-disciplinary unit is designed with the 5th grade Colorado Academic standards in mind, together with the key concepts of the International Baccalaureate’s PYP. The interactive notebook aspect keeps the children engaged and they have to think independently. The experiment stations are just a whole lot of fun! If you can get your hands on owl pellets, you’ll be the best teacher ever! My 5th graders loved this hands on science experience.
50 pages of inter-disciplinary, printable materials
Suggestions for over 12 lessons (3-4 weeks)
task cards for 3 collaborative group inquiries
6 experiment stations
8 interactive notebook foldable activities
research based lesson plans.
The lessons took me about 4 weeks to complete and culminated in a summative assessment that was a collaborative group effort, where the children have to take on the role of a professional adaptation specialist and together create and design a mystery animal based upon the information given about the animal’s environment.
I have included a few websites that you may find useful as a resource.
