I’ve included the IB Learner Profile, IB Attitudes, and Key Concepts in this product.
I've included graphic organizers that compliment the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. Each trait includes both COLOR, BLACK and WHITE, of both BLANK templates as well as LABELED templates of BOTH CIRCLE GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS & and FOUR SQUARE GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS which can be implemented as you deem or used as an assessment piece. I have also included student and instructor RUBRICS in child friendly language.

{Some traits are represented via several representations.} This product includes 243 pages of bright, cheerful, ethnically diverse & culturally aware clip art.

I created this product to aid my students with both
deepening their thinking as well as to aid them in writing about concepts. We employ graphic organizers for nearly every content area that I instruct. I felt that it only made sense to carry those skills and behaviors over to our IB PYP Framework as well; specifically-our Learner Profile, Attitude Traits & Key Concepts.

1. I feel that graphic organizers allow students to be
more creative and flexible in developing and
deepening their schema/connections and
reasoning skills.
2. I have also noticed it particularly helpful for
students whose native language differs from the
language of instruction as they may understand
the concept but encounter difficulty with labels or
vocabulary barriers.


IB Traits Thinking Maps are a phenomenal way to informally and quickly assess (your student’s):
a. Background knowledge,
b. Schema
c. Comprehension,
d. Mental flexibility-with regard to the content,
e. Content attainment & mastery.
f. They are great for pre-writing activities which
allow students to “dump” all of their ideas that
pertain to the topic matter, similarly akin to “brain-
storming” pre-writing activities.
g. The graphic organizers also allow visual students
the opportunity to organize and elaborate upon
their ideas.
h. This method is especially helpful for students with
organizational challenges.
i. Students with ADD/ADHD and Executive
Functioning diagnosis also perform better with the
aid of visual organizers a.ka. graphic organizers.

The IB PYP Concept maps are perfect for differentiation and meet the needs of:
1. Early childhood students/primary students
2. Elementary students,
3. ESL students/Non-Native English speakers,
4. Gifted students in an engaging and interesting
manner,
5. Younger students may illustrate and label as their
ability allows.
6. Older elementary students may opt to illustrate or
record examples of each trait within each UOI.
7. Students may also jot down their thoughts to help
them compose more descriptive definitions or
describe how their listed examples exemplify the
traits.

The IB Trait Thinking maps can be implemented with the use of the included student and teacher rubrics. I’ve also included explanations and examples of how to implement each graphic organizer to give you a quick tutorial should you not be familiar with the use and implementation of graphic organizers. This product has been classroom-tested and I can attest to its powerful impact on my student’s interest, grasp of and mastery of content. I’ve successfully implemented graphic organizers with students as young as pre-kindergarten and kinder.

The graphic organizers are also great to:

A. Display in hallways,
B. Display in classrooms UOI displays,
C. Document each’s child’s progress in their UOI
portfolios and
D. Student led conferences as evidence of learning.

I often run a copy of the graphic organizers on the back of our UOI projects and journals to save paper. It’s also convenient for the students as well b/c they can quickly reference the graphic organizers as they write about:
A. Self-selected topics,
B. Respond to provocation or
C. Engage in reflection.

I also further believe that since graphic organizers elicit student responses that they are far superior than “worksheets” which commonly solicit “cookie-cutter” responses. Students must “Show what they know”; (a common phrase which I use). The graphic organizers encourage individuality and fluency of ideas. In my opinion they (graphic organizers) improve student’s confidence and allow students to expound upon their own learning via peer-learning! Win-Win.

The IB Trait Thinking Maps can also be used as character education supplements. The IB Attitudes, IB Learner Profiles and Key Concepts include many traits that support the development of global learners and leaders!
