This lesson includes teamwork, delegating responsibilities, and practicing keyboarding skills. The students must choose a team. I instructed them to think about all the icons and symbols, "It would be wise to have a diverse team - a team with students who play chess, who have traveled to other countries, who are in the school band, and so on." I like to include a little talk about how on a football team each member has a different role and that it is only when they work together that they can win the game.
The students type the paragraph using the Alt Codes to insert icons and symbols. Then they work together to decipher the message.
Afterwards, they write critically about their process and their ability to work as a team. I will never forget Charles who sat in the back mostly unnoticed by the others. He was the only one who knew the symbol for a pawn. He was the class hero that day!
