Teacher Note: I developed this goal and benchmarks for non-fiction reading selections using the non-fiction comprehension continuum of the Developmental Reading Assessment-2. Just fill in dates and predicted reading levels.
Prep: I make copies of the DRA2 non-fiction continuum the rubric we complete to determine reading levels (intervention, instructional, independent or advanced).
Then, I develop my non-fiction reading lessons around the components of the continuum…prediction (reasonable questions that might be learned from text), non-fiction text features, scaffolded summary for each chapter or heading, important vocabulary and literal (with supporting details), interpretation (understanding of important text implications) and reflection (the message and relevant reason for opinion) question.
Then I am able to attach the continuum to written assignments for my records. So easy for progress notes!
