This is a fun and interactive lecture where students will learn about immigration to America at the turn of the century. As the student review the lecture they write journal entries pretending they were an immigrant describing their experience.

This lecture reviews the following topics: the push and pull factors for immigration, old v new immigrants, journey across the Atlantic, Ellis Island, living and working conditions and treatment of immigrants. It includes pictures, charts, graphs, sound clips from real immigrants,links to YouTube film clips, discussion questions, etc. At the end, the students complete an activity where they analyze political cartoons related to immigration.

Objective: Students will be able to analyze the “push” and “pull” factors for immigration at the turn of the century and the American reaction to it by completing diary entries.
