CONTENTS

STEP-BY-STEP LESSON PLAN
This step-by-step plan will guide you through the lesson, providing you with discussion prompts and tips for teaching.

THE TEXT: Magnolia Miscreants Strike War Memorial
This original news article (written for this lesson, so students can’t find the answers anywhere online), tells the story of a recent incident of graffiti in a small town - it is clearly subjective, and students will examine the word choice and language to see how the writer’s opinion is conveyed.

MAKING INFERENCES
This one-page worksheet helps consolidate students’ understanding of how we make inferences based on a text; students are provided with a series of statements which they have to identify as true or false, and then back up their opinions, citing from the article as they do so.

COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS
Included in this lesson pack are two different levels of comprehension questions (to help with differentiated learning or to facilitate extension exercises); these help assess students’ understanding of the article.
+ Comprehensive Answer Keys

[BONUS] UNDERSTANDING CONNOTATION
As this lesson focuses around making inferences based on word choice and tone, to consolidate this understanding, an additional worksheet on connotation has been included. This could be used as an extension exercise, for early finishers, or as a homework activity.
