STEP-BY-STEP LESSON PLAN
This step-by-step plan will guide you through the lesson, providing you with discussion prompts and tips for teaching.

TAKING NOTES WHILE WATCHING A TED TALK
The introductory exercise in this lesson involves watching a TED talk on the subject of education. There is a one-page handout included to help students take notes while watching.

THE TEXT: An Editorial About the State of Education
The original passage for this lesson is an editorial which discusses the state of education today, looking at the US and Finland, and comparing the traditional model of schooling with homeschooling and ‘unschooling’.

WHAT IS AN EDITORIAL?
This informational handout can help guide your teaching, or can be given to students to keep in their files/books for reference purposes.

COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS
Contained in this lesson pack are two different levels of comprehension questions for the informational text. These two levels work well in a differentiated classroom.
+ Detailed Answer Keys

TRUE OR FALSE
This page contains a list of statements about the content of the informational text - students then have to decide, based on their reading, is these statements are true or false. This may seem like a simple exercise, but it actually requires students to analyze the subtleties of the text.
+ Detailed Answer Key

[BONUS] Let’s Compare & Contrast
An optional extension activity is for students to compare the format, language, structure and content of the two different pieces (the video and the editorial). A planning page is included for this activity.
