Join us on a journey to Pennsylvania around 1915. What was life like on a farm during this time? What did people do for entertainment? For work? As your students read the passages and look at the pictures of this real family in 1915, they will be doing their “work”: Learning to recognize six types of structure for both reading and writing of informational text.
The power point “Teaching Structures” was designed for teaching Grades 5-8. This power point provides information about the following six structures: cause/effect, problem/solution, description, chronology/timeline, compare/contrast, and sequence. This is followed by a text example for each structure. Then the students have 10 informational text problems in which they must decide the structure. The answers to these 10 problems are included.
I chose the nonfiction cookbook on the “gutenberg” site for the subject matter of the informational text Mary at the Farm and Book of Recipes Compiled during Her Visit among the "Pennsylvania Germans", by Edith M. Thomas written in 1915. This book is considered “public domain” and it’s not copyrighted.
I hope you and your students will find the “history” of these people from the early 1900s to be interesting information to read. As the students read more and more slides, I believe they will get the feeling of being “back in time.” I know I did.
