The Writing Prompt: 3 options

There are two templates with given writing topic prompts and one blank template for students to write on their topic of choice.

The Introduction: hook, thesis statement

The Body: point by point structure; block style

The Conclusion: summary of comparison and contrast points made; a re-statement of the thesis statement; a reflection on how the subjects in focus are useful in light of their similarities and differences.

SUGGESTED USE

† Teach the features and structure of a compare and contrast essay using the mentor text.

† Provide mini lessons on using both compare and contrast transition words in writing.

† Students practice writing the introduction and body paragraphs in both pont-by-point style and block style using the interactive notebook resources.

† Students then choose their own topics to compare and contrast or respond to any of the 21 writing prompt cards. They plan their writing on the graphic organizer choosing any one style. They write out their first draft under the flap.

† Students also have the option of writing and editing their draft in the flipbook.

† Finally have students publish their writing. They may used the lined sheets or type out from written draft observing corrections and revisions.

Writing a compare and contrast essay in a point-by-point style and block style can be quite challenging but with the scaffolding this pack provides, your students will be able to take on this task with confidence.
