Students evaluate eight classic elements of humor in Fox Searchlight's 2004 insta-cult classic, Napoleon Dynamite.
This assignment includes 32 questions that ask students to identify and assess the comic value of the film. Students will find themselves evaluating rhetorical strategies, impact on audience, character features, and more. This can be used as a stand-alone assignment, a springboard into discussion of rhetorical techniques used to create humor in literature, or as a culmination to the study of humor in literature.
I use this assignment as a portion of our study of humor in literature, but it also works really well in the event that you find yourself needing a substitute and something engaging for students to tackle. Students do not need to have prior knowledge pertaining to the technical aspects of humor in order to be successful in this assignment.
Napoleon Dynamite is rated PG and is approximately 90 minutes long.
