I use this easy to assemble 25 page interactive book to teach students about actions and how to answer “what” questions that ask about actions. “What” questions most often require an answer that includes an object so when the answer requires an action, it can really throw our students off!
This book it hands on and interactive experience while providing plenty of practice with answering questions and using action words! The first page about each “character” explains the action they are doing and why they are doing it. It also prompts the reader to perform the action - a fun & truly interactive part of this activity! The next page then asks them a question that requires them to give the action that was performed (such as “What is Alex doing?”). They can give the answer verbally or children with more limited verbal skills can phyically “give” the answer by choosing the appropriate action from the 12 moveable picture choices. The goal is to get the child to pair the picture with a verbal response. If he/she does not offer a verbal response, model it for him/her. The repetitive nature of this book is likely to eventually shape a verbal response. Your modeling is key!
Because it is natural for children with language deficits to resort to visual matching, you will see that I used “reversed” images to reduce this tendency somewhat. Even if the child seems to just be matching pictures, your repetitive modeling can still drive the concept home!
A teaching tool/visual is also included!
