In my experiences over the years I have noticed a dramatic decline in the amount of students that are not playing pick-up invasion games in the neighborhood or organized invasion sports. They don’t even play tag or one of my favorites, Hide n GO seek! This down fall has led to the “fear of the ball” “fear of losing” and the lack of skill (dodging, fleeing) to play the game. Many students also lack the confidence and knowledge of the game. Time and time again I hear the skillful players “EXPRESS THEIR DESIRE” for a less skilled player to “GET OPEN”. The less skilled player has no idea what you or anyone else is talking about. So back to the drawing board I went and tried to determine what areas the majority of our students were struggling in.
The games is this bundle use a “Teaching Games for Understanding” approach that will ultimately help the students learn tactical strategies that can be used in other units. They will also let the students refine technical abilities in a less threating environment.
The games are divided into three relevant areas to help teach these concepts.
Invasion by running (helping the student gain confidence and use diversionary tactics to elude the defense.
GOLD RUSH, STAR GATE, CHAIN STATION, RULER OF THE RINGS and CRISS-CROSSE
Invasion by throwing/rolling to a target (help students refine technical skills in a team setting)
ROLLER RESCUE and SLIDERS
Invasion by advancing equipment to a moving target (enable students to combine the two previous skills sets and infuse them into a game setting)
PUNCH BALL, SHARK TANK
