Students have a hard time remembering the order of the Scientific Method-- but an even harder time APPLYING it and deciding which part of an experiment is the QUESTION or Purpose? the Hypothesis? My daughter and friend couldn't identify them last month in 10th grade! I had them do this ONE TIME-- and they GOT IT!! We all are better with VISUALs these days. SHOW and DO-- forget TELLing.
MY ConceptCARDS allow for APPLICATION of these concepts (high-order thinking skill) with 2 different Scientific Experiment examples. PLACE each ConceptCARD (broken into each part of the Scientific Method) on the WHEEL OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD!
INDEPENDENT? DEPENDENT? CONTROLLED? What are the VARIABLES and how do you know? Can you IDENTIFY them in an EXPERIMENT? How do we GRAPH them? USE DRY MIX! ConceptCARDS teach as students actively "DO".
There are so many ways to use these ConceptCARDS and MATS-- I can't list them all! Interactive Notebooks?--shrink to 80% to fit perfectly on a Composition Notebook page. Teacher Small Group? Stations?--laminate a set- it's completely self-directed. Differentiated Learning? -- PERFECT for SpED or ELLs because it required NO WRITING! Make the MAT into a POSTER and use as an Interactive Vocabulary WALL!
