This lesson guides student to experience the 1:2:3 ratio in the volumes of cones, spheres and cylinders of comparable dimensions, such that they will never forget it.
Please note, this lesson requires a set of "cylinders" (made from basic plastic water bottles), "cones" (pac-man shaped cut-outs to match the cylinders) and "playdough" (I use an online recipe with baking products). It takes some prep - but the "ah-ha" moment is worth it!
Note also that this is an 8th grade standard that is included in this unit as part of the advanced 7th grade track.
This is one of 12 lessons in my "In and Out" unit that targets area and volume for 7th graders in the advanced track. The goal of the unit is to build understanding of why the formulas for area and volume work, such that if students forget the formulas, they can cognitively reconstruct them on their own.
