This IPA lesson for your Intermediate-Low to Intermediate-Mid students will not only have your students speaking, writing, and interpreting on the topic of immigration, but it will also hopefully help them understand, be compassionate and tolerant, and share facts with others who may be intolerant towards immigration. I use this lesson after I’ve taught the present tense subjective as it opens itself up to a lot of reflection and emotional reactions that would trigger the use of the subjunctive.
The lesson helps students work towards these ACTFL Intermediate can-do goals:
-I can ask and respond to factual questions about infographics, articles, or videos that are presented (Interpersonal)
-I can express my thoughts on issues that I have learned about or researched (Presentational Speaking)
-I can write about something I’ve learned related to immigration and I can share my reaction (Presentational Writing)
-I can understand a short YouTube clip or a short audio recording (Interpretive Listening)
-I can understand basic information I read on an infographic or in a news article (Interpretive Reading)

• A teacher’s packet (both .pdf and editable .pptx format) with essential questions, a progression scale, vocabulary lists, many teacher’s resources, notes, conversation prompts, assessments, answer keys, and rubrics
• A an editable PowerPoint presentation to accompany the lesson handouts and assessments
