Best of luck to you and your students on ISTEP! This product (the PowerPoint and video) include tips and strategies that helped my students succeed on the ISTEP exam. In the several years I taught middle school, my students always scored well above state average, despite a rapid increase in the poverty level of our students. These strategies worked well for my students, and I hope they work for yours, too!
You can simply look through the PowerPoint or watch the video that narrates the PowerPoint, providing more information and details to help your ISTEP preparations be successful this year and in the years to come, focusing on learn effective, teacher-tested strategies to help your students be successful on the constructed response, extended response, and writing prompt, including how to score the writing prompt yourself and to teach the students to do the same. You’ll also be given a sample unit plan, as well as effective strategies to embed in your class throughout the year. Also included are tips for both students and teachers.
I’ve included is a copy of the ISTEP rubric, available from the Indiana Department of Education website, for your convenience. Also available from the IDOE website are essay exemplars (search ISTEP Released Items). I’ve reformatted them for easy scoring on your part.
This product was created as part of a workshop held multiple times at Ball State University through the Indiana Writing Project.
