"I asked. They answered. I wrote." Legend has it that Ernest Hemingway, a famous and celebrated author, was once challenged to write a story using only six words. This fun ice breaker activity passes on the challenge to students, with creative brainstorming prompts ("If you were a type of salsa, what would you be?"), directions, and examples, for writing their own "6 Word Memoir." It's a fun way to engage the students at the beginning of the year and briefly share out their personality to you and their peers. You can also have the students creatively display their "memoirs" by asking them to write/type it on index cards, card stock, or construction paper, along with visual images, and display their succinct writing around the class.
