Ideas for play:
These mats are a great way to incorporate pretend play
into your therapy sessions, too! Get out the plastic ice cream scoops
, and place one on top of each scoop on the mat. Have your student pick one they want to add to their bowl or cone, and practice the word underneath. Make guesses about what flavors you think each color would be, and talk about your own favorite flavors, too! Take turns pretending to be the ice cream shop employee and the customer! (PS- If you don't have plastic scoops, use ones from your Target felt sets, OR cut out your own from different color felt pieces.
Do the same thing with pom poms! Pom poms are a great substitute for the plastic scoops
, especially if you are in a larger group with minimal or no plastic/felt ice cream scoops available. Put 2-3 small pom poms on each scoop on the mat. Use tongs to practice fine motor skills and transfer them to a bowl to make your ice cream. Practice making requests- "I want blue ice cream" or "I want 1 purple and 1 blue scoop." and then practice the word under the blue scoop AND the word under the purple scoop. Continue until all pom poms have been picked up.
Using plastic scoops and pom poms also works great to target language skills like sequencing, concepts, and following directions.
Give your students specific requests about colors/flavors you want, including the number you want if you are using multiple pom poms per ice cream scoop on the mat. Give them a specific sequence to put together- ie chocolate on the bottom, blueberry in the middle, and banana ice cream on top.
You can even use these as playdough smash mats,
smashing a playdough ball on each scoop as you practice!
