I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice Cream.... and Reading! I have students choose a reading goal (sometimes I choose the goal depending on student need) and track it using the ice cream scoops. I often use a students IEP goal but this could be implemented in any classroom to track reading progress. I use it for letter recognition, nonsense word fluency, sight words, reading fluency, and reading accuracy. This could be used for any reading needs. Once the goal is chosen I record students beginning score and write the goal on the sheet that we are trying to achieve. I break the goal into 10 and write each of the 10 mini goals into each scoop. As students achieve 10% of their goal they color in a scoop to show their progress. Some of my students calculate their own goals based on their mathematical abilities. Its all about what works for your class. I also have written from 0-100 by 10’s in the cones to record percentages as well. It’s all about what works for your class. I have seen great success in my students when they track their own data. They are excited to color each new scoop in!
