*Please look at the preview to find a more in depth idea of what is included…as well as pics of what it might look like in your classroom.
In addition to everything else that you have to teach in your classroom, mastery of sight words or high frequency words are a major and on going project in your student’s education. I have struggled in the past on figuring out how to make learning these words fun and engaging. It finally dawned on me that I needed something more than the curriculum provided to provide a rich and engaging way for my kiddos to show they mastered these very important words. My SDC kiddos are lucky enough to included with a fantastic grade level at my school and we now all buy into celebrating our kiddos growth in this skill with a HUGE ice cream party at the end of the school year. Who doesn’t love ice cream??? This pack was created so my kiddos could buy into a year long process of introducing, practicing, and mastering sight words. I didn’t believe that it would grow to be so long but I use every page that is included and I have seen such growth in my lovely kiddos… I know you will too.
*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PACK IS USED WITH HOUGHTON MIFFLIN’S JOURNEYS 1ST GRADE HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS. If you are looking for a more extenstive pack, I have uploaded my FRY’S ICE CREAM SCOOP SIGHT WORDS on Teacher Pay Teacher already. It includes Fry’s first 300 sight words and all the printables you see here are also available using those sight words. I have also uploaded an ICE CREAM SCOOP pack for KINDERGRATEN AND 1ST GRADE using the Houghton Mifflin high frequency words…so many choices.
*THE PAGES INCLUDED TAKE AWHILE TO SET UP but I promise it will be well worth it as you see your kiddos buying into this year long learning project. Please feel free to give me any kind of feedback so that I can continue to alter if needed.
*PLEASE NOTE THAT PRINTABLES COME WITH TWO DIFFERENT HEADERS…you have a choice to use pages that have the scoop number or the theme number (ie: the student testing pages include “Ice Cream Scoop #1 or Theme #1). I included both because I know we all need something a little different to function in our hectic classrooms.
*Houghton Mifflin’s JOURNEYS high frequency words broken down into ice cream sight word list for the whole year (1 version with a parent note, 1 version to be used for whatever you need).
*Ice cream word and sentence for all 244 1st grade high frequency words that can be used to introduce the sight word of the day. I also included the poster that I mount the word onto for the kiddos to see when they walk in. Please see pictures for more info.
*Ice cream scoop practice lists that can be laminated and used at school or at home for homework. I copy on the coordinating color for the ice cream scoop that goes on the wall.
*Ice cream scoop homework practice page and score tracker. We use these pages to put in the homework folders AND THEY STAY IN THERE so that you can use it to test the students on test day (usually Friday for our class). I like this page a lot because it shows students and parents how they did and what words still need to be practiced at home. Each time I test I use a different color pen to mark the words that the kiddo was able to state correctly so I can quickly score it and move onto the next kiddo. After they pass, I put the next ice cream scoop homework page in their folder and the old one goes home after I record the score. They can also use this page to help fill in their own bar graph when they become independent enough to do so.
*Ice cream scoop test page that I print out and mount onto the coordinating color for that scoop before laminating for durability. These get used a lot throughout the school year and they definitely need to be printed on cardstock or laminated.
*Student flashcards for all 10 ice cream scoops (10 themes). I have the students cut out their set as soon as they pass their previous scoop and I attach them to their ice cream scoop ring. They really seem to enjoy this because they like to see how many words they can get on their ring. Each set is printed out on the coordinating color construction paper so that they can flip through them without the flashcard ripping. These can also be a great tool at home for parents to help their kiddos during homework time.
*All 300 Fry’s sight words PLUS any extra 1st grade high frequency words that are used (over 340 words) for your own ice cream scoop sight word word wall. This comes with all the letters and words that are used throughout the year. Although it can be time consuming, I laminate each word and letter so they can survive for a few years. There are also blank cards that you can fill in with other frequently used words.
*All 10 ice cream scoops that can be hung up on the wall as students pass the different scoops. I print these out on the different colors that go along with the other pintables that are included in this pack. I do this so everything is easier to find and organize BUT it definitely doesn’t have to be done that way in your class. Cones and cherries are also included. I write the students name on the cones so that they can easily find what scoop they are on. The cherry goes on top when they pass all scoops! We celebrate all students who have passed at all scoops by the end of the year with a HUUGE ice cream party with the rest of the classes that want to participate.
*Individual student bar graph and ice cream scoop practice page for students to track how they are doing with their sight words. There is a bar graph for each scoop. I make a copy for each student and have them located in their data binders and they mark their bar graph on each Friday after I test them.
*If you see any mistakes or boo-boos, please feel free to let me know and I will try my hardest to fix or tweak it!
*All borders, fonts, graphics, and backgrounds are found at TPT and are credited on the last page of this pack. The creativity of some people is so overwhelming and humbling!
*I truly hope that this pack will benefit your kiddos as much as mine. This has been a huge project to put altogether and I am thrilled to share it finally.
