This activity was designed specifically to address the engineering design standards for K-2. (K-2-ETS1-1, K-2-ETS1-2, and K-2-ETS-3) The NGSS includes engineering practices and standards for all students in grades K-12. At the introductory level (K-2), students begin to understand a basic process for engineering design. Although the engineering design process is not taught explicitly, 3 simple steps are emphasized as students are engaged in simple engineering design challenges. First, students need to be able to understand a problem. In this activity the problem is that ice cubes are melting too quickly for a snow cone company. The next step is to develop a solution. Students sketch out ideas of how they might solve the ice cube problem and then get to work building a solution. The final step is to compare different solutions. Students compare their solution with their classmates. Several activity sheets guide students thought this engaging activity. A variety of materials can be used, depending on what you have on hand.
3 different levels of activity sheets are included with this product to accomodate the wide array of students in grades K-2.
