I use this activity/assignment at the start of the school year for multiple reasons: icebreaker, a baseline for presentation skills and computer skills, as well as my personal introduction to my students.
I go through the powerpoint and I might stop to add more information or to tell a story that is connected to the major events in my life.
After I have gone through my presentation--my personal introduction--then I go over the instructions for the student assignment; essentially, they are going to mimic the set-up of my presentation.
Rather than highlighting major individual events, students will collaborate in a group setting to create a presentation about the shared major events in their lives.
The collaboration takes the pressure off of students who are too anxious to present alone, and also allows time to introduce themselves in a smaller group setting before introducing themselves to the entire class.
