Description

Icy Road Investigation is a hands-on science activity that uses simple materials to help your students understand why roads are treated with a mixture of sand and salt during the winter. After conducting the investigation, students will discuss how sand and salt affect ice and how these findings can be used to make icy roads safer in winter. This science experiment can be completed by students working with a partner or in cooperative learning teams. The activity involves placing ice cubes or crushed ice in zippered plastic bags with sand and salt so students can observe the effects of those two substances on the melting ice. The Icy Road Investigation product includes two pages of teacher directions with key points to discuss and a 3-page lab report for students to complete. A Google Slides version of the lab report is included.

This activity can be used in a general science classroom or as a part of an earth science or physical science unit.

Note: The Google Slides version of the lab report was added on October 1, 2020. If you purchased this product before then, download the updated product file to access the digital lab report!
