Idea Tennis is designed to be a visual aid/tool to help students compare concepts and analyze cause and effect. It's great for brainstorming and student-led conversation. It can function as an interactive Venn diagram. The concept is this: the Player (Student) “serves” a Tennis Ball (Idea) to the other side. The other side represents what could potentially be opposition to the idea or another way of seeing the idea. The opposite sides will then go “back and forth” until the Idea is fully analyzed or the Server (Student) changes his/her original position.
This activity can be used as brainstorming for an essay, especially with comparison. It should assist the student in seeing the other side of their argument. This activity could be done with another student as a way of teaching students to use evidence to defend their thinking.
