This packet is based on the first grade standard for 1.G.A.3: Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understanding that these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.
Equal shares are vital in first grade because it gives them a base for understanding fractions and division in the later grades. Being able to recognize equal shares helps us to recognize real-life situations (time, measurement, money). By using shapes to introduce halves and quarters, students can relate to things that people do every day.
This packet includes practice with identifying and partitioning halves and fourths and equal shares. The objectives for these worksheets are:
IWBAT identify equal shares.
IWBAT identify halves
IWBAT identify fourths or quarters
IWBAT partition circles and rectangles into halves.
IWBAT partition rectangles into fourths (or quarters)
The SMP’s for these worksheets are:
MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
MP4: Model with mathematics
MP6: Attend to precision.
This packet also includes a differentiation of each worksheets for students who need intervention and students who are on IEP’s.
REMEMBER: Equal parts are the SAME!
Each piece is the same as the other.
