Description

Reading the emotions of others and knowing what to say is a complex skill, and difficult to teach! This resource relies on structure and context to make it much easier! It includes both a PDF (color and black/white) PLUS a BOOM CARDS™ version!!

WHAT IS THIS RESOURCE FOR?

The purpose of this resource is to help students:

1) Identify how people are feeling in different scenarios (based on body language/facial expressions, the context of the situation, and what they can infer).

2) Identify an appropriate verbal response to say to the person.

WHO IS THIS RESOURCE FOR?

This resource is designed for students that have a general understanding of a wide variety of emotions, beyond just a few basic ones (i.e. sad, happy, mad). It is for students that struggle to take the perspective of others and know how to respond to someone’s emotions.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

There are 34 scenarios included. Each scenario fits on one page and includes a short written description and a picture of a person experiencing an emotion. For each scenario, there are 4 questions/prompts:

READING THE EMOTION: How does the person feel?

INFERENCE: Why might the person feel this way?

RESPOND: What is something that you could say to the person?

CONNECT: Tell about a time when you felt this way.

The resource is broken into 2 sections. The first section contains 20 scenarios that are geared towards elementary and middle school students while the second section contains 14 scenarios that are designed for high school students. However, crossover between the two sections may be appropriate for some students, as the topics in the high school section are not too mature for younger students.

A WORD BANK and an ANSWER KEY are included for each of the above sections.
