Description

Reading the emotions of others and knowing what to say is a complex skill to have.... and is difficult to teach! But with this resource, you won't have to try and come up with relevant and real-world situations for your students.... this activity has them built in!

This resource will help your students read the body language and facial expressions of others and consider the situational context to make inferences about how people are feeling. The resource takes it even further, by prompting your students to identify what they could say in each situation.

Go beyond simple feelings (such as happy, sad, and mad) and dive into more complex emotions, such as jealousy, pride, and confusion. This activity will help your students take the perspective of others, and know how to respond to someone's emotions.

There are 34 scenarios included. Each scenario fits on one page and includes a short written description and a picture of a person experiencing an emotion. For each scenario, there are 4 questions/prompts:

  • READING THE EMOTION: How does the person feel?
  • INFERENCE: Why might the person feel this way?
  • RESPOND: What is something that you could say to the person?
  • CONNECT: Tell about a time when you felt this way.

The resource is broken into 2 sections. The first section contains 20 scenarios that are geared towards elementary and middle school students while the second section contains 14 scenarios that are designed for high school students. However, crossover between the two sections may be appropriate for some students, as the topics in the high school section are not too mature for younger students.

A WORD BANK and an ANSWER KEY are included for each of the above sections.
