In this Identifying Functions - Task cards activity, students will go over 18 task cards and identify the functions. In the student worksheet provided, students must circle yes or no under “is it a function?”, and if not, explain why not. Then they must write the output for 3 given functions, and explain what makes a relation a function. This activity can be done individually or in groups. My favorite is in groups of 3 or 4 because I ask the students to not share their answers with their group until everyone is done and discuss the ones that are different. I love it when they explain their answers to their classmates. Also, being in small groups makes them feel more comfortable.

Just print, cut and go! If you’re short in time, you can ask your students to cut the task cards as part of the activity. My students love when the activity involves something other than math :D

Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If 𝘧 is a function and 𝘹 is an element of its domain, then 𝘧(𝘹) denotes the output of 𝘧 corresponding to the input 𝘹. The graph of 𝘧 is the graph of the equation 𝘺 = 𝘧(𝘹).
Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.
