This lesson uses Patricia Polacco's book The Christmas Tapestry to teach how to use specific details to answer an open response question. Students are given details from the story to answer the open response question. They need to decide whether or not the detail is specific. With the selected specific details, students put them in sequential order and glue to the answer sheet creating an open response answer. I've found this open response practice to be very scaffolded for children and helpful because it takes out the physical act of writing which can hinder some children's thinking.
• Open response question page
