Students are given a range of previous ELA state exam prompts. (Labeled by grade level from 5th to 7th grade as 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2...etc.).
Students are also provided with two thesis statements that came from sample responses for the exam prompt that is provided.
- One thesis statement is from a sample response that was graded as a 3 or 4 on the exam.
- One thesis statement is from a sample response that was graded as a 1 or 2 on the exam.
Students have to read the prompts and select the strongest thesis statement.
This handout can be taught as a matching excersize or used for a gallery walk.
The last page of the document has an answer key for the teacher with brief explanations as to why one statement is stronger than the other.
