The students will read the story and determine the theme of the story. Then they will spin the spinner to answer questions related to theme.

To “play” the center, the students will use a pencil and a paper clip to spin the spinner. When they spin a question the first time, they will answer the question. If/when they spin that question again, they will add more details to their answer or prove their answers with evidence from the text.

Answer keys and recording sheets are included for the centers.

Example prompts/questions:
Determine a possible theme of the story.
Provide a detail from the story that supports the theme that you wrote.
Summarize the story. How is the summary different from the theme?
Determine another possible theme for the story.
Describe the challenge in the story. How did the character’s reaction to the challenge support the theme?
How does the theme you wrote connect to your life, another story you have read, or a show you have watched?
