This 90-minute mini-lesson is designed to help students collaborate to articulate a central theme that runs through multiple short stories in Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies". The document is in editable Word format so that any group of short stories or even novels (literature circles) could be used to apply the same idea.
Students begin by articulating some of the main ideas, concepts, or life lessons that their chosen story explores. Then, they pair with another student and compare the themes they've identified and try to articulate a theme that runs through both of the different stories. Then they group with yet more students and as a group, they identify the central theme that could apply to all the different stories in the group. Finally, they identify passages that support that central theme and explain how the passage helps develop it.
