Hi,

I have been looking for a way for students to learn and have fun at the same time.

To my surprise, my students outperformed the district average. wew whoo!

So, I am sticking to the following format.

I begin each lesson by giving the students 5 minutes to write the vocabulary list which is used to connect the vocabulary words with the specific graphics on the supplemental aid.

I then ask students to do their best and draw the graphics. Surprising enough their drawing skills are getting better and more colorful. I guess you could print it out, but I don't want to jinx my method. I honestly was scared the first time I saw their drawings in their journals.

I go over each part of the graphic as they draw, and I answer questions that curious minds have. Some are getting good at guessing the meaning of each part of the graphic as I ask, " What do you think this means"?

The beauty of this format is that you can leave the supplemental aid up on your classroom walls during exams since there are no words. If you are not taught what the graphics mean you will have trouble understanding it.

A lesson can last one to two 45-minute class periods. Usually one period and a small part of the next.

Students review for exams through student groups of 3 brain dumping everything they know about each supplemental aid then proceeding to the next one after 3 minutes.

P.S. I have a very high percentage of English language and high risk learners in my classes.

Good Luck and I wish you success!

The children are our future!
