This Smartboard lesson encompasses the different parts of a newspaper. First notes are given on the structure of a newspaper including: first section (world news, major news, and editorials), local news, sports section, feature section, classified ads, and paid advertisements. While teaching each section with the listed detailed notes, students can look at each section in a newspaper at the same time (active learning). The next slide includes notes on hard news stories (again the students can use a newspaper while going over this topic). Another slide shows students how to write a news story. There is an interactive page using the internet for students to review newspaper terms. Political cartoons are also addressed giving characteristics and examples. This Smartboard lesson can be done in a few days breaking the lesson into different sections. This is a great way to teach another kind of informational texts.
