Identity is an extended metaphor poem that compares weeds and flowers to two types of people. The flowers represent those who are beautiful, popular, yet controlled and focused around other people, while the weeds are those who are unpopular, ugly, yet are free.
It is a beautiful poem that is really great to unwrap with the students!
In this lesson, the students will read the title and predict what the poem will be about. After that, they are to use my close reading analysis of each stanza and fill in the blanks to match the poem.
There are 3 versions of this:
Version 1 (most accommodated)- word bank PER stanza
Version 2 - word bank for the entire close reading
Version 3 (early finishers, Pre-AP, TAG, AIG, etc) - no word bank
There is also a multiple choice quiz with a short answer (answer key attached) once they are finished with the close reading. This is a great activity for both introducing poetry as well as a review!
My kids enjoyed it, and even said, "I like doing this and I don't like poetry at all!" :) (Don't you love it when they say that??)
