I have used this during a Harlem Renaissance unit when discussing identity, and I have also used it when teaching sociology and examining varying factors such as SES, religion, gender, etc.
Students are asked to examine the evolution of a concept or the (mis)representations of a group. Past student focuses include: gamer girls, homosexuality, rights of migrant workers, Hinduism, Muslims, beauty, etc.
Students must examine media representations as well as consider how these ideas impact education, what legislation exists related to their focus, etc.
I really enjoy having them do this project as it can be very eye-opening for everyone as they research and share their findings.
