This unit includes 38, level 1 idioms recommended for 2nd - 3rd grade students. You will find an idiom list, idiom cards with seperate meaning cards to match, BINGO cards, matching worksheets, and fill-in-the-blank worksheets to help teach the 38 idioms.
There are many idiom lists. Many include idioms that are unfamiliar to children. Many are not used in various regions. It is difficult to know which idioms are appropriate to teach to meet educational requirements.
I gathered many lists of idioms. I asked groups of children with normal development, what the idioms meant. I found that different age groups knew different idioms. Within my lists, there seemed to be progression of difficulty among idioms. I surveyed over 200 children from 1st-10th grade.
I sorted my idiom lists into 4 levels, and I discarded idioms that the upper teenagers did not know. I now have idiom lists with levels 1-4.
Level 1 for 2nd-3rd grade
Level 2 for 4th-5th grade
Level 3 for 6th-7th grade
Level 4 for 8th grade and up
Take into account that every region will have their own common idioms. I live in Southwest Utah. These idiom lists are based on idioms common to my area.
It is my hope that Speech Language Pathologists and Teachers will find these lists helpful in teaching appropriate idioms to children.
