Spend a solid month of school digging deep into the world of figurative language with a focus on the IDIOM. Here is a PDF file in a presentation format of 22 "Idiom of the Day" slides. Students appreciate the consistent format of idiom in neon green, meaning in white, and example sentence with idiom in yellow text.
How to use in the classroom? I start my Language Arts class with "something of the day" each day and spend no more than 10 minutes on it. Have your students create a Figurative Language notebook with an "Idioms" section and record the idiom, meaning, and either the example provided or an original one! This has built rich conversation in my 5th grade classroom and I hear my kids using what they learn in conversation outside of class as well :)
