This amazing idiom of the week pack contains everything you need to teach idioms for the year. Idioms are color coded in sets of 5 week increments so students work on an idiom for a week and then move on and are assessed every 5 weeks. The pack contains a sheet for the week. Students give the definition on day 1 (Monday), draw a picture on day 2 (Tuesday), use it in a sentence on day 3 (Wednesday) and connect it to their life on day 4 (Thursday). This pattern follows Marzano vocabulary acquisition.
Every 5 weeks students take an assessment (supplied with an answer key). The assessments also include spiral review of certain idioms for continuous review. The assessments are two parts; students must first match the picture to the idiom and then use each idiom in the sentence.
Idioms can be done as a class or completed on their own. My preference is to scaffold and allow a graduate release of responsibility; we begin as a class and then the students gradually complete the idioms on their own.
This is a great activity for all students, but especially beneficial for ELL students and low and struggling readers and students. Students enjoy finding the idioms in their own reading.
