This is a bundled unit on Idioms, Adages, and Proverbs perfect for meeting the Common Core Standards: ELA L.4.5b and L.5.5.b: Recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs.
In this unit you will find an engaging Powerpoint which defines idioms, proverbs, and adages, gives examples, and provides practice in identifying them. They may also be printed out and used as classroom posters.
The task cards can be used as a center activity or whole group activity. There are 16 cards with examples of idioms, adages, and proverbs with multiple choice definitions. Students can use a recording sheet to work independently or can work with a partner in answering the questions. An answer key is also provided.
In addition, there is an original engaging story with examples of idioms, proverbs, and adages. This is a differentiated activity and can be done as a whole group or independently. Students will read the story and underline the idioms, proverbs, and adages they find. Then they will record their answers on the recording sheet and provide a definition for each. There is an option for differentiated instruction in which the student is provided with some of the idioms, proverbs, adages, or definitions and they must complete the graphic organizer. The third option is a cut/paste to match the idioms, proverbs, and adages with the definition. An answer key is provided.
This unit will produce results in teaching students about idioms, proverbs and adages in a fun and engaging way. It is perfect for differentiated instruction, centers, and special education students!
