This file was written in order to address the following fourth and fifth grade Common Core ELA Standard: L5b. Recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs.
This file contains 6 idiom-themed units, and each unit is intended to last one week. The units are as follows:
Week #1: School and learning
Week #2: Food
Week #3: Weather
Week #4: Cats
Week #5: Dogs
Week #6: Clothing
Each weekly unit covers 10 themed idioms, adages, and proverbs and comes with a variety of instructional materials:
1) Two versions of the student handout – one with and one without QR codes. Students will define the idiom, adage, or proverb and attempt to use it in a sentence.
2) Idiom and definition cards that may be used in a matching game or used as flash cards to help students uncover the meanings of the phrases.
3) Large display cards with QR codes. Scanning the QR code on each card will give students the definition of the phrase. These can be used in a classroom display or in a small group center.
4) Assessment – matching and fill-in the blank items for each week.
There is also a generic literal vs. figurative language activity that may be used with any phrase, any week.
Answer keys and descriptions of weekly routines and teaching strategies are included.
