This is an activity that I have been incorporating for years. I have found the student don't know the meaning of our own cultural idioms, such as "to be a fair weathered friend." I developed this activity to raise their awareness of such expressions,
*Speech assignment: Students sign up and research one idiom to present to the class. Included is a list of common idioms and guidelines for how to present them to the class. Also, a very basic speech rubric is include
* Creative Writing Follow Up: Idiom Vignette- This assignment asks the students to write a story using idioms as a critical element. Here they apply their new found understanding. A detailed scoring guide/rubric is included.
I use this in my high school ELA classroom -- but it would also work in a ELL classroom, middle school, or upper elementary.
