This fun idiom game (matching) will help reinforce the common core objectives for 4th and 5th grades: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.4.5b and CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.5.5b Recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs.
This is a set of 25 idioms (50 cards). One card has the picture and the matching card has the idiom saying.
These cards have lots of different uses. You can use them to introduce idioms, such as giving the kids a baggie of mixed up cards and seeing what the kids already know about how to match them up. Then discuss if they got them right. Allow for an opportunity to discuss what each means. You could also have the students write ten sentences with the matched up cards or during writing they can try to use idioms in their story.
I will be using these cards as a memory game after we have already discussed idioms. For this, I have included an answer key so there is no dispute among the players as to which cards get matched together.
The answer key with the matched up cards can also be used to glue in their writer's notebook as a sample of idioms to use when they are writing.
Feel free to use these cards in your classroom however you would like.
