Idioms add so much to writing, voice, and characterization. This fun assignment gets students using idioms in their own writing.
The lesson starts with an ultra-engaging PowerPoint. Students draw from their own background knowledge to provide meanings for common idioms. The PowerPoint then illustrates several idioms with short video clips drawn from popular movies and cartoons. Next, students analyze idioms in a short passage and write their own short passage with idioms. Sharing is suggested!
Day 2 of idioms (optional) entails a project in which students create an idiom comic strip. Multiple examples are given. These types of projects instill long-term memory of concepts.
Thank you and enjoy!
