Teach your students about idioms using this PowerPoint presentation*. The presentation begins with a definition of idioms and then includes multiple examples of idioms (including origins of the idioms, actual meanings associated with the idioms, and sentences demonstrating typical use of the idioms). It then has a worksheet (which can be printed for students) that asks students to identify the actual meanings of many common (and some uncommon) idioms. The presentation also includes an answer key slide that can be projected to enable students to check their answers. The final two slides include directions for students to think of as many idioms as they can, then choose one or two to from that list to create an idiom poster. A picture of what a humorous illustration of an idiom would look like is included.
*This lesson is geared toward literature classes that are learning literary terms, not ESL or ELD classes that are learning idioms for language development.
