Use these 24 task cards to help students identify idioms in fiction and determine their meaning through scaffolded practice. These task cards provide short excerpts from middle-grade fiction to help students recognize idioms in books they may currently be reading!
12 task cards ask students to determine the meaning of a given idiom based on the context. 12 additional cards ask students to first identify which words from the excerpt constitute an idiom and then to record the meaning of the idiom. Separate answer sheets are provided for each set of 12 cards. The two different levels of difficulty allow you to differentiate for your students or to use one set as independent practice and one set to discuss together.
Perfect for centers, partner work, or a whole-class "scoot" activity, these cards also work well as an introductory activity before having students look through classroom or school library books for more examples of idioms!
