After reading If I Ran the Zoo by Dr. Seuss students are asked to create a creature they would capture if THEY ran the zoo. After drawing the creature in their habitat students then glue the picture onto slightly larger black paper and add bars to resemble a cage (Some of my students even got creative and did aquatic animals adding plastic wrap instead of bars to resemble glass). The students must then write a detailed paragraph about the creature. Brainstorm details that may be on a typical animal informational sign (location, prey, predators, fun facts, etc). Students will also mark on the informational sign the location where their animal lives. In the box they also replicate the drawing of their animal. The top line is for the type of animal they created. They should make this up as well, just as Dr. Seuss did in his book!
ELA CC Standards:
