~If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Thematic Unit~
This great packet revolves around the popular children's story written by Laura Joffe Numeroff. It consists of multiple ELA and Math center games, as well as, whole group activities that can be used after reading the story. This packet also includes two writing prompts about the story. Below is a detailed description of all fundamentals included:
Whole Group Activities:
This packet includes two whole group activities. Cue cards with vocabulary from the story can be placed in a writing center or used as vocabulary immersion while reading the story. Sequencing cards are included in which the children can put in order the events seen within If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. These cards include illustrations and are self correcting.
ABC Center Games:
This packet includes three different ABC center games that can be placed in a learning center, used for a small group lesson or even used with a whole group. The first game is upper and lowercase letter matching in which students match the lowercase letter (milk) to the uppercase letter (cookie). The second game is a CVC word mat game in which students create CVC words based on a picture. Students place "cookie letters" on a "napkin mat" to create the words based on the picture. The third game involves Elkonin boxes in which students practice their phoneme segmentation fluency by listening to a word and placing a mouse within the Elkonin box (more detailed instructions are included for each game in this packet).
Math Center Games:
As with the ABC games, these math games can be used in a learning center, small group, or even whole group. The first game is a counting game in which students have "number mats" and they must count out the correct number of cookies and place them on the mat (numbers 1-20 are included on the mats). The second game includes 4 number stories in which the students can practice simple addition and subtraction 1-10. The third game involves patterning in which students complete AB, AABB, and ABC patterns using pictures from the story.
This packet includes two simple writing prompts-
"My Pet Mouse" in which children can write about what they would do if they had a pet mouse and also " If you give a ________ a ______, he would want _______ to go with it." For this prompt, there is also space for an illustration. For example, a student could fill in the lines with...If you give a puppy peanut butter, he would want jelly to go with it!"
This packet is designed to help you create cute and child centered activities that revolve around this beloved story. If you like this packet and are satisfied with it's quality, please check out my other thematic units!
