This is a fun writing activity that goes along with the Laura Numeroff series "If you give a mouse a cookie". After sharing several of the Numeroff books and discussing the patterns found within them and the cause and effect relationships. Instruct your students that the class is going to write their own version of this story. The class will write a story entitled "If you take a teacher to the mall". Display the slide on your active or smart board and allow the students to help you write this creative story. Emphasize the various cause and effect relationships that happen as you create this story. After you have finished your class story (and possibly added several cute cartoons to accompany your text!) instruct students that they will be creating their own stories following this model. Give the students their graphic organizer "If you _____ a ____ to the _____," This organizer will allow your students to choose an animal or themselves as the main character in their story. They will complete the organizer, have it approved by you or a peer partner, and proceed to write their final copy on the writing templates provided in this bundle. A space has been provided for text and for illustrations as well. The templates may be copied front and back or cut into half sheets and bound with ribbon or yarn. They can also be stapled together.
This has been a hit in my classroom! My students loved creating their own books and sharing their creations with the class. This is also a great opportunity for you to let your aspiring authors share their books with a lower grade level. This will inspire your students to produce their best work and encourage young writers as well!
