Igneous Rock Classification Sheet
The teacher will need to provide Granite, Rhyolite, Obsidian, and Basalt samples. Using the handout, students will identify physical characteristics of the rocks.
For this activity you will identify the following igneous rocks: Obsidian, Basalt, Rhyolite, and Granite. You will observe your samples then describe them according to their physical properties. (Intrusive, Extrusive, Texture, Cooling rate etc.) Textures include: Glassy, Fine-grained, Coarse-grained, and Porphyritic
Students must define the terms:
Intrusive, Extrusive, Lava, Magma, Obsidian, Rhyolite, Granite, Basalt, Texture, and Porphyritic
